Line Feed Difficulty - Hand Held String Trimmer (Bump Head)

Why won't a string trimmer feed line out properly?
Why would trimmer line melt and stick together?

Non-SpeedSpool® models:

The most common reasons for line feed difficulty are usually fairly easy to cure.

First, be certain to only bump the head while it is spinning at or close to full rpm. The speed of spin helps the line to advance.

Next, when winding the line, be certain to keep one line at the top of the reel and the other at the bottom. If the two lines cross during winding, a bind will occur at the point where they crossed.

Also, the weight of line helps to pull and feed more line. Be sure to bump the head often enough to keep the line at least 50% of the total maximum cutting length. If the line is worn down too short between bumps, advancing additional line may become difficult.

The following is also a possible, but rare scenario for line feed difficulty. Operating the unit with less than 50% on the maximum cutting length can also allow the speed of the unit to increase, due to decreased load. If the speed of the machine is raised for any length of time, heat may build up. This heat can then be transferred to areas that normally stay fairly cool. If the string absorbs this excessive heat, it may soften. When the string cools it may stick or “weld” to itself.
